The following citation accompanying presentation of the award to C.O. Ravenell is taken from the Medal Day 2011 booklet.

CORRECTION OFFICER JAMES RAVENELL, BRONX COURTS

In the 116-year history of the NYC Department of Correction, thousands of uniformed and civilian staff have served the Department with great bravery, honor and distinction on and off the job. But few of those DOC staff have received a Purple Heart. That distinction goes to Officer James Ravenell, who received the military’s highest honor in 2004 for the wounds he received in Iraq, when his vehicle, carrying fuel and ammunition, was blown up by an explosive device while on a convoy for the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his “outstanding performance, technical expertise and unwavering commitment to mission accomplishment in a hostile environment.”

Officer Ravenell joined the Department of Correction 22 years ago. He has since retired from the US Army, but he is still carrying out a critical role at the DOC, where he serves in the Security Office of the Bronx Courts, maintaining security equipment and assisting with the search of all inmates.

Officer Ravenell also is a volunteer with the Military Advocate Team and referees high school football and basketball — demonstrating once again that his heart is still fully engaged in serving his fellow man and woman on and off the job.

WEBMASTER NOTE: At Medal Day 2011 ceremonies in the George Motchan Detention Center (GMDC) on Rikers Island Nov. 15th, the NYC Department of Correction honored staff for heroic acts on and off the job, as well as for distinguished and exceptional on-the-job performance and community service. This New York Correction History Society (NYCHS) presentation features images derived from photos taken by NYCHS at the event as well as texts and images scanned by NYCHS from NYC DOC's Medal Day 2011 booklet distributed at the ceremonies.
