North Infirmary Command

North Infirmary Command consists of two infirmary buildings, one of them the original Rikers Island Hospital built in 1932. The facility has a capacity of more than 400 beds for infirmary care, non-infirmary and general population inmates. It also houses inmates who require extreme protective custody because of the notoriety or the nature of their cases. A special dormitory houses inmates with AIDS and AIDS-related cases.

James A. Thomas Center

James A. Thomas Center was formerly the House of Detention for Men. The facility was renamed in memory of the Department's first African-American warden. Built in 1933 as Rikers Island's first permanent jail, the HDM originally was called the Rikers Island Penitentiary. In 1980, a Federal court order capped the jail's capacity at 1,200. JATC is a maximum security single-cell facility. It no longer houses inmates.

Eric M. Taylor Center

The Eric M. Taylor Center was built in 1964 and expanded in 1973. EMTC's current capacity is about 1,851. It houses adolescent and adult male inmates sentenced to terms of one year or less. Most of its housing is dormitory style. Able-bodied sentenced inmates are required to work. They constitute Rikers Island's grounds crews, facility maintenance and industrial labor force. In July, 2000 the institution's name was changed from the Correctional Institution for Men to the Eric M. Taylor Center in honor of a retired Chief of Department who capped a distinguished career by helping lead the agency to significant gains in jail safety, efficiency and performance.

George Motchan Detention Center

George Motchan Detention Center was originally opened in 1971 as the Correctional Institution for Women. It now has a capacity of about 2,098. In 1989, the jail was renamed after a 17-year veteran Correction Officer who was fatally shot in the line of duty. With the 1988 opening of the Rose M. Singer Center for women, GMDC became a male detention center.

(formerly Adolescent Reception and Detention Center)

Adolescent Reception and Detention Center was opened in 1972. The facility houses adolescent male detainees (ages 16-18). ARDC has a capacity of about 2,238 in a combination of modular dormitories, Sprung structures and cells. The jail was formally dedicated the Robert N. Davoren Center in May 2006 in honor of the former Chief of Department.
