The 26-ton steel-hulled vessel that had served NYPD 27 years was received by the Correction Harbor Unit last spring. With some help from the Department's Support Services Division, Harbor Unit officers -- then under the command of Captain Joseph Dike -- refurbished the launch for daily patrol around Rikers Island. It also sees regular duty at Hart Island and is on call to assist NYPD and the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management. The launch, now the largest boat in use by the Department, is operated by a crew of three or four officers. Now under the command of Captain Miguel Western, the Harbor Unit is part of the Special Operations Division whose mission is the security of Rikers Island and other facilities of the Department. |
