NOTES ABOUT THIS NEWSLETTER LIST:

Below are listed a half dozen or so issues of the New York City Dept. of Correction's third known newsletter, Inside Out, that emerged under Commissioner Benjamin Ward. They are kept in the archives maintained by the New York Correction History Society at the Correction Academy.

A notice on the first issue's front page provides some background information about its emergence:

More New More Often

We have a new name, a new look and a renewed commitment to provide the Department of Correction staff with an informative monthly newspaper starting with this maiden issue of Inside Out.

As its predecessors did, Inside Out will depend on you, the DOC employees as its primary sources of information.

With a newspaper format and a more rigorous publishing schedule, we'll be more dependent than ever on the Department's uniformed staff and civilian employees for news.

If you know something that we should know, contact your institutional reporter or the DOC Public Affiars office.

The masthead listed Edward Hershey as Assistant Commissioner for Public Affairs, James Vann as Art Director, Marvin J. Tessenholtz as Production Supervisor, and the following Contributing Editors: Sandra Lewis Smith, Al Anderson, Katherine Dawkins and Errol Toulon.

Besides a Commissioner's Corner column by Commissioner Ward and a legal column The Law Inside by Legal Division Director Robert Daly, the following bylined articles appeared:

  • Blue Knights Change Motorcyclists Image by Sandra Lewis Smith about DOC Investigator Marvin Badler as president of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.

  • C.O. Morabito Wins Fourth Award by Katherine Dawkins about CO Andrew Morabito being honored for heroism.

  • A Paper for 2000 Who Are Out of Circulation by Ralph Gardner about an inmate magazine organized by long-time volunteer Barbara Margolis at Rikers HDM.

A photo credited to Errol Toulon shows Inspector General Lawrence Finnegan and Deputy IG Anthony Schembri working with ADWs James Hunter and Arthur Teneriello.
