The note of informality and spontaneous humor that ADWs/DWs Association president Schwartzbaum had introduced with the prior recipient really stepped up a notch when Victim Services director Viki Sharp came on stage to accept its Humanitation Award.

Whereas ADW Stukes had sought to stifle his grin while standing at attention, Viki entered into the levity of the moment, responding with hui's, oh's and ah's at her medal's display.

Janice Jackson Humanitarian Award
DIRECTOR VIKI C. SHARP, VICTIM SERVICES

Viki Sharp came out of retirement after 35 years as a crime victim advocate with a national reputation to join DOC. She planned to spend a year. she recalls, "putting things in place to help staff and mentoring others."

The year came and went... and Sharp realized she wasn't ready to take off for warmer climes. “I fell in love with the staff at NYC DOC and I want to continue to make life more gentle for them and their families,”

She points out that all her actions to date have taken with the help of others. These actions include the expansion of CARE into a Department-wide peer intervention team equipped to respond quickly to staff in need. This expansion involved training more than 350 staff and 50 community volunteers in crisis intervention, critical incident response and crime victim issues.

She's also taught a First Responders class for staff, and is working with Capt. Gamien Batchelor to develop a military advocacy team for DOC military personnel, and an Office for Victim Services to address the Department’s strategic goal of becoming victim-friendly and victim-focused. Most recently. she assisted in the planning of a friends and family orientation session for new recruits.
