The 11th 1948 Rikers virtual tour close-up is immediately to the left of the 9th which showed the power plant and ferry slip. This shows the resident staff "village." Lack of easy auto access to the bridge-less island required that some key staff reside on Rikers. Most of the "village" area is now occupied by Transportation: gargage, gas pumps, and parked buses. The Telcom structure decades in the future would be built at the village triangular site's tip (upper left). Near there can be seen the only red brick village structure remaining from that era. The TEAMS and Chief of Department trailers now line the strip opposite it between the shoreline and road that has been blocked off there.

Veteran current and former NYC DOC staffers and others who can correct, refine, enhance and increase the information in the close-up image caption above are invited to do so. Include the close-up's virtual tour image number in your e-mail to the webmaster@correctionhistory.org
