One segment of Jails of New York in the NYCTV Original Productions "Secrets of NY" series focuses on Rikers Island, particularly the NYC Correction facility that began in the mid-1930s as the Rikers Island Penitentiary. It later became the House of Detention for Men and was named the James A. Thomas Center in 1989 for the agency's first African-American warden. Used for offices and hearings, it no longer houses inmates.
