MANDANICI 1984 LETTER OF RETIREMENT AS CCA PRESIDENT

April 30, 1984

To The Membership:

This coming May 18th I am starting the last vacation I will ever take from the Department. The next step is retirement, and I am getting an early start.

As Hollis Community Mayor running parties for handicapped children.

For the past 20 years, I have had the honor of serving the Captains Association. This was never an easy task, but it was always a labor of love.

Although it is time to say goodbye to an active daily role in directing the affairs of our union, I feel very much like a father who has watched his beloved child grow to maturity.

As our union's first President, I can tell you that this growth was not without pain: when I took office, we had a grand total of $2.07 in our treasury ... today, our assets number in the millions of dollars.

Mandy & Assemblyman Seminerio.

We have won the respect of the labor community by our actions, and it is my greatest wish that our record of accomplishment continue past my tenure. Of course, I leave with mixed emotions. On one hand, I will miss the service to our members and the struggle for economic and social dignity which has been a part of my life for so many years.

On the other hand, I have gone the whole 15 rounds, and I believe I deserve a rest. My depature is eased by my belief that I leave our union In capable hands.

Captain Donald Cranston will assume the duties of President, and the Executive Board, which I hope will still. be known as the Mandanici Team, is a fine collection of individuals with skill, experience, and dedication. Just as Donald Cranston has shown himself capable of leading our union, so has the Executive Board proved itself worthy of the task of supporting him in the battles to come.

Buono Bridge dedication.
Our leadership team has served long and well, and I expect it will continue to do so long after I am gone.

No man can work as long and as hard as I have f or one cause and not expect his work to live on after he has departed. I sincerely believe that Donald Cranston and the Executive Board are the right people for a most difficult job. It is for these reasons that I ask the membership to extend cooperation and support to the new leadership during the transition period.

You can take the man out of the job, but you can not take the job out of the man. It is time for me to leave, but my heart will always be with you.

Sincerely
Al Mandanici
(Retring) President, C.C.A.
