Of all the African
Americans who fought for the Union, only about 100 entered or became
commissioned officers. These included doctors and chaplains such as 20th USCT
Chaplain George W. LeVere and 26th USCT Chaplain Benjamin F. Randolph. Note:
Flag of 34 stars. 4 rows of 7 stars, 1 row of 6. Lincoln refused to remove
stars of the breakaway states.
